What is World League?

Here are some questions and answers to give you an idea of what the FIVB World League is all about.

What is World League? And what’s the big deal?

World league is a yearly tournament put on by FIVB (Fédération Internationale de Volleyball). It started off in 1990 as an intensive marketing program to promote the sport of volleyball in a way that would appeal to audiences around the world.

In 2013, the Canadian team won its pool, advancing to the playoffs and winning an exciting battle against the top-ranked Russian team, ultimately finishing fifth overall. The team’s performance resulted in a seven-place gain for Canada in the World Rankings – from 18th to 11th.

With Canada’s successes in the last few years, including recently qualifying for World Championships in September, they are on their way to qualifying for Rio 2016.   World League offers a rare opportunity to watch Olympic level volleyball live in our home town.

Where does World League take place?

World League, unlike World Championships and Olympic games, is designed to be played in several cities around the world allowing every team to host a number of matches during preliminary rounds (round robin).

Canada is hosting 3 matches during the preliminary rounds:

  • Canada vs. Finland, Stampede Corral, Calgary – May 31st /June 1st
  • Canada vs. Belgium, Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre (UBC), Vancouver – June 13th/14th
  • Canada vs. Australia, Rexall Place, Edmonton – June 20th/21st June

After qualifying, they are now looking ahead to the World Championships in Poland.  The FIVB World League tournament is a great place for the men’s team to play as a team again in preparation for World Championships.

It’s also a great way for them to connect with their fans at home and to promote the sport in Canada.
